Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five, featuring Hilary Alexander

Jonathan Stout and his Campus Five, featuring Hilary Alexander is the nation’s premier swing dance band. Showcasing the small-group sound of the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, the Campus Five is the most danceable swing band anywhere. The 7-piece Campus Five captures the true sound of the Swing-era, with all the energy and excitement that inspired millions to dance. Influences include the Benny Goodman Sextet, Artie Shaw's Grammercy Five, Count Basie's Kansas City Six, and the Harlem-based small groups of Illinois Jacquet, Cootie Williams, Coleman Hawkins, and Hot Lips Page.

Cal Poly University Jazz Band

Our jazz band program combines the professionalism of a working big band with the academic rigor of cutting-edge big band repertoire.

The University Jazz Band has been professionally contracted to perform at the world’s largest jazz festival (the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee), the San Jose Jazz Society’s Sunday jazz series, a swing dance series in Santa Barbara, the Morro Bay Jazz Festival, the Jazz Jubilee in Pismo Beach, and as an opening act for Don Byron and comedian Bob Newhart.

The Cal Poly jazz bands perform specialized repertoires, including modern big band concert compositions, swing dance, world music (including Ethiopian pop), heavy-metal (music from Pat Boone's In a Metal Mood big band album), TV themes, and jazz for cartoons.

The University Jazz Bands have received unanimous superior evaluations at collegiate jazz festivals, and was rated as the best four-year collegiate big band at U.C. Berkeley's Pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival.

Both competitions will not only focus on musicality, technique, and individual style, but will emphasize fun. Bring your best moves, connection, and smiles to inspire awe in our judges!

Registration will be 100% online this year! It will open on Friday, April 13, at 6pm!

Things You Need to Know:

  • The entry fee is $5

  • There is a maximum of 20 leads and 20 follows for each competition.

  • Novice-level competition: Our novice competition is perfect for any new swing dancer who wants to show off their skills.  If you have placed in any swing dance competition, you are not eligible to compete in this competition. • Prelims will be Friday at 7:30PM, to start at 7:45PM

    • Finals will be Friday at 10:45PM

  • Amateur-level competition: Our Amateur-level competition is for dancers who have danced their way around a little bit and want to strut their stuff before the judges.  If you have placed in any regional- or national-level competition ex. Camp Hollywood, Fog City Stomp, Lindy Focus, Inspiration Weekend, etc.) , you are not eligible to compete in this competition.

    • Prelims will be Saturday at 7:30PM, to start at 7:45PM

Format:

  • Novice and Amateur Prelims: Two heats of ten couples will dance in 3 to 4 all-skates, changing partners in between each song. A dice roll will determine each partner change. During this round, the dancers will be individually judged on their style and dance ability. For both competitions, 5 follows and 5 leads will move on to finals, with an alternate lead and follow being determined by the judges in prelims.

  • Novice Finals: One heat of 5 couples will dance 3 all-skates to DJ’ed music. The dancers will be judged individually.

  • Amateur Finals: A dice roll will determine the pairings for the 10 finalists. The five couples will remain together for the duration of finals and will be judged as a couple. There will be an all-skate (not judged), followed by a judged spotlight section (full chorus, then half chorus), and an all-skate for the final evaluation. Finals will be danced to live music by Jonathan Stout and His Campus Five feat. Hilary Alexander.
